Beginnings can be quite tricky. Beginnings that you're already somewhat familiar with can be deceptively trickier.

In the year of our Lord 2024, it seems rather retro to start a blog. And yet, here I am, starting a blog.

It wasn't an impulse decision, it's been something I've been mulling over towards the end of 2023, discussing with friends in nostalgia fuelled conversations about how good the old internet used to be.

Put simply, I want to blog to try out ideas, say something, geek out and express myself. These are things that I don't believe any social media platform is truly capable of. I'm totally happy to step back into a Web 2.0 mindset. I don't particularly care about the metrics of the exercise. I'll type what's on my mind and you can feel free to read. That's the deal.

It's not my first blog, I was blogging back before podcasts existed, let alone were a thing for everyone to start ;) I made some good friendships through blogging and I loved catching up on everyone else's writing. And I miss those days where people could express themselves in more homegrown, less algorithmically mediated ways. Let's face it, what I'm really trying to say here is that I miss the slices of life brought to me by my friendly neighbourhood RSS reader (Dear Google, pls bring back Google Reader, you know there's a market for it).

What can you expect? Well, probably just bits and pieces really. I get paid to think and teach and research so some of those thoughts may appear here as initial attempts to refine them. But I'm also more than my job. I do so many things that I think are interesting and perhaps you will too. You can expect to get to know me over time, like any good friendship.

What can't you expect? Well, it is 2024 so I'll be a good, boundaried blogger. I won't be writing anything that puts my professional life or personal life in jeopardy. As much as we all enjoyed Petite Anglaise back in the day, it serves as a cautionary tale.

I'm looking forward to sharing slices of my little life with you.
